A breast cancer vaccine currently being tested in a Phase II trial has demonstrated to be safe and well tolerated in patients according to a paper to be published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The therapeutic breast cancer vaccine AE37 uses a peptide antigen (immune-stimulating fragment) of a cancer gene known as HER-2/neu. This gene/protein is present in many types of cells, but it is over-expressed in a high proportion of breast cancers as well as many others.

The identification of five genes involve in the metastasis of breast tumours to the lung is the principal finding of a scientific team made up of two bodies from the University of Navarra, the Applied Medical Research Centre (CIMA) and the University Hospital of the University of Navarra.Doctor Alfonso Calvo, researcher in the area of Oncology at the CIMA, led the work with the special collaboration of Doctor Ignacio Gil Bazo, cancer specialist from the University Hospital.

Bavarian Nordic's cancer research unit, BN ImmunoTherapeutics, hascompleted an interim analysis of its first two clinical studies withMVA-BN(R)-HER2, a cancer vaccine immunotherapy for breast cancer patients. The first study, performed in the US, is evaluating MVA-BN(R)-HER2treatment following chemotherapy and Herceptin(R) treatment.
